Reading Programme

Reading forms the basis for language skill development and foundational learning. It helps children understand the world around them through stories.

Reading towards a brighter, better future

Due to economic or social challenges, many students struggle with foundational literacy either due to limited access to books or lack of reading support at home. This gap can impact their communication skills and overall learning across subjects. A 2022 UNICEF report highlighted the scale of the issue, revealing that only one-third of 10-year-olds worldwide can read and understand a simple story.

The Reading Programme addresses this challenge by helping students move from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. Targeted at grades 1 to 8 in government schools, the programme combines vibrant libraries and structured literacy support. It helps students develop strong reading habits and thrive both in school and beyond.

  • Cultivates a love of reading by providing culturally relevant and engaging books in school library programme.
  • Implements activity-based curriculums to solidify reading fluency.
  • Offers books, pedagogy and curriculum in either of the three languages: English, Hindi and Marathi depending on the needs of the school.
  • Providing books from 6+ publications curated and contextualised to students’ reading levels and background.
  • Employs a team of 145+ teachers, supervisors and a programme team. Each library has a dedicated teacher tagged to it.
  • Creating an activity-based curriculum that combines fun and structure in reading.
  • Creating a space that inspires children to read.

Impacting lives positively

By providing a rich and diverse selection of books, the programme ignites a love of reading in children. Exposure to different writing styles and genres broadens their vocabulary and improves their comprehension skills. This newfound confidence in reading translates into better communication, both written and spoken, allowing them to participate more actively in school and future careers.

The Reading Fair is an annual showcase held across multiple schools, where students proudly present their learning from the programme. Through this event, different stakeholders including the parents, teachers and education department officials get to see the programme’s meaningful impact on students’ literacy development.
